Hello and welcome to Nurture & Nanny’s May Newsletter!

Last month I had the opportunity to travel to Ireland with my dearest childhood friend. At first I was a bit apprehensive.  Thoughts raced through my head. "Can I really leave work for a whole week?  What will our families and nannies do without me?"

Not having taken a vacation since I opened the business and being a firm believer that we all need to take time to stop and smell the roses, I realized I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. So I somewhat hesitantly accepted the invitation to visit the Emerald Isle.

Boarding the plane at the Tom Bradley Terminal I began to feel what it must be like for families to leave their children in the care of a nanny for the first time.  Did the staff have all the emergency contact numbers they would need?  Would they know how to handle a nanny who was lost on her way to an important interview?  Would they be able to deal with a family who was in need of a nanny yesterday?

Like a mother on her first day back at work, I felt the overwhelming need to check in “back at home” several times the first day of my vacation. I peppered my staff with questions.  Was everyone getting along?  Did you get that nanny where she needed to go?  Does anyone miss me?

As the days went by, I found myself relaxing more and checking in less. At the end of my vacation I got nostalgic when I realized that I hadn’t checked in all day and the agency was running just fine without me.

Nurture & Nanny has been my baby since its inception.  I was there for its creation, spoon fed it every step of the way and put it to bed at night  This trip allowed me to take a step back and taught me how to just let go.  Like a toddler learning how to walk on uncertain ground I needed to give Nurture & Nanny the chance to fall all on its own.   But instead of thumping to the ground it has run off on solid legs that I can barely keep up with.

All the best,

Lara

Don’t forget Mother’s Day is coming up on the 13th of May.

May Play Day
Spring can be a very busy time of year. New activities fill the calendar, and after-winter clean up jobs are many. Consider taking a day to break away from all of the must-dos and celebrate the season. . . Plan a May Play Day!
Childhood Obesity by Stella Reid
On the show, Nanny 911, I work with parents whose families are often out of control. In my 18 years as a nanny, I have offered advice to families on many different concerns ranging from temper tantrums to potty problems. However, I want to bring your attention to one of the most alarming issues that is currently threatening the health and quality of life of families - childhood obesity.
